Luminous Veil

2009 Membrane Screen Wall, IUE Izmir University of Economy, Izmir, Turkey

Michael Hensel and Defne Sunguroğlu Hensel

The Luminous Veil screen wall comprises of a cable-net with a varied membrane array. Luminous Veil was designed and constructed as part of the Auxiliary Architectures / Membrane Spaces master-class on textile screen wall design and form-finding at Izmir University of Economy.

Luminous Veil was constructed in glassed a sky-walk that connects two buildings of the university. Located on the east-facing glass facade of the skywalk the textile membrane array shades the space of the skywalk until midday. During the afternoon hours the membrane array catches the sunlight at low angle to bring more daylight into the skywalk.

During the master-class students developed a total of 16 varied cable-net and textile membrane arrays at model scale, employing analogue and computational form-finding methods.
